Canelo vs Trout - Press and Fans Stats

After a long day I can finally reveal my findings concerning the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Austin Trout. I was able to collect 194 scores from Press and fans for this fight which was deemed to be a close one with the exception of the ringside judges. You will see in the scores below that the Press had Canelo narrowly ahead in the 45 scores collected whilst the fans on twitter and all the best boxing forums had Trout winning by a decent margin In total the fans sent in 149 scores. Thanks.
My score for the fight was 114-114 a draw but I did have Trout winning 6-5-1 in rounds but gave Canelo the 10-8 for his knockdown scored in the 7th round.

Cuban Missile Crisis - Rigondeaux Upsets Donaire

Fighting at the famous Music City Hall in New York City. Former Cuban defector Guillermo Rigondeaux upset budding superstar Nonito Donaire over twelve rounds to unify the 122lb Title. Rigondeaux now living in Miami, Florida gave a polished performance where he displayed his speed, skill and his ability to keep to his game plan as he confused Donaire for large parts of the fight.
Donaire did have some success most notably in the tenth and a huge left hand floored the WBA champion. Rigondeaux recovered quickly and by the end of the round was firing back the better shots at the Filipino.
The fight started at a slow pace. This is usually Rigondeaux's plan. He has never been a rushed fighter who feels the need to throw loads of punches. Donaire on the other hand was expected to be able to out throw and out land the Cuban but right through the fight Donaire was far to conservative with his punches. In the first it was Rigondeaux's counter straight lefts that probably won him the round. He was faster and landing the cleaner punches. Donaire targeted the body in the second and had some mild success as Rigondeaux seemed to be moving around the ring too much trying to avoid being hit. It was a close round with very little action.
Booing from the crowd started in round 3 as the action was still slow with very little clean shots landed. The best single shots though were being landed by Rigondeaux. Donaire was moving forward towards the Cuban but he was not letting his shots go enough and this was where Rigondeaux was catching him with right hooks inside and that straight left. In the fourth Donaire began to block that counter left and with twenty seconds of the round left the best exchange of the fight happened with Donaire out landing Rigondeaux with his quick hooks. Round 5 was a write off, i scored this one 10-10 as nothing really happened in the round
Rigondeaux had a better sixth round, Donaire had no jab so Rigondeaux was timing his left hook to perfection as his fellow titlist got closer. The pace was still slow and the crowd were becoming unsettled as they expected a shoot out from two big hitters. On my card Donaire sneaked the seventh as he started more aggressive forcing Rigondeaux back, still there wasn't enough action for the fans but finally at least Donaire was trying to press the fight.
Rounds eight and nine were Rigondeaux rounds. The pressing that Donaire had in the seventh had evaporated. The pace suited Rigondeaux again as he moved around the ring landing his well timed straight left. The expected boom happened at the start of the tenth. Probably knowing he was behind Donaire exploded a combination off a break that floored the Cuban. Rigondeaux got up walked around a little and went back to the poker face and fast countering style that was winning him the fight.
Donaire's chance was now gone as Rigondeaux easily won the last 2 rounds marking Donaire's right eye quite badly which requires the Filipino to keep a glove tucked at his eye to protect it. HBO in the states who covered the fight had Rigondeaux a wide winner but had also mentioned the ringside press had the fight much closer probably because in the rounds that nothing much happened, Donaire was the one doing the pressing.
All three judges scored for Rigondeaux giving him the WBO title to add to his WBA strap at Super-bantamweight.

Fightscorecollector's April Fight List
There is a big month of boxing coming in April where I intend to cover most of the big fights. This is a 3 week month for my site as i will be missing the last weekend in April as i have a little holiday. Before that I'm all over the world up at whatever AM watching the big fights and bringing you the press and fan scores. I start of with the exciting WBA-WBO Flyweight champion Brian Viloria making another defence of his title in China. A week later the big 122lb unification title fight between Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux takes place in New York.
Saturday April 20th is a massive night of boxing on both sides of the Atlantic. There are so many fights i could have covered but i have picked the Cleverly-Krasniqui 175lb title fight from the UK and then the much awaited Canelo Alvarez - Austin Trout WBC/WBA 154lb Fight taking place at the Alamodome in San Antonio Texas.

There is a big month of boxing coming in April where I intend to cover most of the big fights. This is a 3 week month for my site as i will be missing the last weekend in April as i have a little holiday. Before that I'm all over the world up at whatever AM watching the big fights and bringing you the press and fan scores. I start of with the exciting WBA-WBO Flyweight champion Brian Viloria making another defence of his title in China. A week later the big 122lb unification title fight between Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux takes place in New York.
Saturday April 20th is a massive night of boxing on both sides of the Atlantic. There are so many fights i could have covered but i have picked the Cleverly-Krasniqui 175lb title fight from the UK and then the much awaited Canelo Alvarez - Austin Trout WBC/WBA 154lb Fight taking place at the Alamodome in San Antonio Texas.

THE WAR - Russian Roulette Win For Bradley

Where do you start when a fight has it all?. Defending WBO Welterweight King Tim Bradley showed the kind of guts that make fighters great, In fact there were numerous references to Evander Holyfield and Arturo Gatti as Bradley came through more than a few rough moments to defeat tough guy Ruslan Provodnilov over twelve rounds at the Home Depot Centre in Carson California. Those references made by the HBO team were high praise for Bradley as Holyfield and Gatti were Ultimate warriors in the boxing world. It was those warrior instincts early in the fight then right at the end that secured the victory for Bradley as he admitted that "Provodnikov was the first opponent that has really rocked him". High praise for Provodnikov from a man that has shared the ring with Superstar Manny Pacquiao.
Before the fight had taken place the general conscientious was that Bradley should win quite easy on points. Basically a wide points decision against a guy stepping up from 140 and had not fought at the same level as the champion. The only question on Bradley part was his long lay off (9 months). Well to every body's surprise this fight surpassed expectations as both guys engaged in war that resulted in both guys being beaten up, one of them knocked down and both guys close to being stopped by their own corners.
The War started as early in the first where Bradley came out boxing spearing his jab as the Russian walked forward pressuring the champion. A big right clearly hurt Bradley as both guys went at it. Provodnikov stunned the champion a few more times in the round before late in the Round Provodnikov was unlucky not to be credited with a knockdown as another looping right hurt Bradley and as the champion tried to clinch he fell to the ground. Referee Pat Russell thought it was a slip. The second was a Provodnikov round, maybe even a 10-8 as again he hurt Bradley numerous times. Fights have been stopped for less, a good point made by the HBO team showing the fight in the States. Bradley just couldn't get out of the way of the right hand. Provodnikov's left hook was also causing Bradley mayhem as he was battered to the ropes. The upset looked imminent.
Bradley responded in the third by boxing rings round his Russian opponent who looked passive. Could Provodnikov have punched himself out??. It looked like it as Bradley began to batter the body slowing Provodnikov even more.. For the next two rounds the action was the same with Bradley now fully recovered boxing beautifully, moving well confusing the on rushing Russian. I gave Provodnilov the sixth as a big left hook hurt Bradley again late in the round. Provodnikov went for the kill but found Bradley matching the leather thrown by the Russian. The harder shots though were landed by the Russian. Even fight on my card at this stage 57-57.
The next four rounds saw Bradley use his skills to totally dominate Provodnilov. The Russian was only having sporadic success as Bradley was simply to fast landing at will with the jab then moving to the body hitting Provodnikov with right and left hooks. Provodnikov's trainer during the break has said he was going to stop the fight as his man was taking too much punishment. Bradley's trainer had said the same a few rounds earlier as he recognised his man was hurt but also not following his instructions.
Round eleven was a close one that could have went either way. Both guys started by slugging before Bradley went in his bike picking his shots better again. Provodnikov was having success too as his big right hand was landing again stunning the champion a few times through the round. I scored for Provodnikov as his shots had more effect. The twelfth was a cracker. Bradley was ahead on the cards and began by throwing that jab to keep the Russian away. Mid way through the round the champion walked onto a left hook. Bradley was hurt again but worse was to come as a massive right hand followed by a barrage finally planted Bradley on the deck. There was less than ten seconds left in the round, i bet many were thinking is this another Chavez - Taylor fight where the guy knocked down was ahead in the fight only to be stopped by the referee?. Luckily for Bradley Pat Russell gave the champion the chance to show he was OK by letting Bradley walk forward to prove his legs were fine. They were, the fight ended to huge cheers and the fight went to the judges.
All three judges scored in favour of the champion. It was the probably the right call although the first round should have been a 10-8 Provodnikov round. If the two judges who scored 114-113 for Bradley had taken the extra point away from Bradley then the fight would have been a draw. The other judge scored for Bradley 115-112 for the unanimous decision. A great fight that was unexpected although many press and fans would like to see this one again.

Prospect Boxing - McCallum Wins Scottish Title

Fighting in front of a near capacity crowd at the Ravenscraig Regional facility Motherwell. Castlemilk's Gary McCallum captured the Scottish Middleweight Title by out boxing Stranraer's Paul Allison over 10x3 minute rounds. McCallum (11st 5lbs 2oz) used his spearing jab to maximum effect to keep the determined Allison (11st 4lb 8oz) at bay in the first, Allison just couldn't get near him as he ate the odd straight right also. The man from South West Scotland kept coming at McCallum in the next few rounds but found his success limited to body shots when he trapped McCallum on the ropes. McCallum was boxing and moving well, his jab was keeping Allison off balance and that straight right was causing a bit of damage round the eyes of his opponent.
The middle rounds followed the same suit. Allison chasing, McCallum evading but spearing the jab doing more than enough to keep Allison off him. Allison best round was the seventh where he managed to trap McCallum on the ropes for a big part of the round. Maybe once or twice it looked as if the body shots from Allison were bothering McCallum but the Glasgow man fought back hard rocking Allison head back with three solid jabs.
Round eight was a close one as Allison began to get desperate. He was charging in recklessly trying just to land anything that would change the fight in his favour. McCallum stayed focused though. He knew he was way ahead so really only had to stay out of danger in the last few rounds. McCallum then got his second wind. In the ninth he was very accurate with the jab and straight right. It landed three, four times as Allison chased him around the ring.
The tenth started out with Allison going for the Hail Mary punch. A big left hook forced McCallum back as Allison attacked on the ropes. McCallum kept his head even sneaking in a few right uppercuts when in clinch. In the closing stages McCallum got the distance he needed by landing the punches he had been scoring with all night, the jab followed by that straight right. At the final bell McCallum ran to the corner and jumped on the ropes to celebrate. Allison trudged back to his corner knowing he had been beaten by the better man. Star Referee Victor Loughlin agreed scoring in favour McCallum 98-93.
McCallum is now 9-0 none early, Allison falls to 5-2-1.
Chief Support on this Prospect Boxing show was local favourite Iain Butcher (8st 3lbs 6oz) who was cheered on by a large support. Butcher took on Bulgarian import Galin Paunov (8st 3lb 8oz) over 6x3s in a flyweight bout which lasted less in 2 minutes. The Motherwell man looks a real prospect as he floored Paunov 3 times in the first round all with body shots. Referee Kenny Pringle rightly stopped the fight at 1.57 after the third knock down. Paunov was in no condition to continue. It was a brief look at Butcher but already he looks as if he could quite far in the game. His body shots were lethal and now must be aiming to get a British title shot before the end if the year. Butcher is now 7-0 2 Ko's.
Mitch Prince (10st 1lb) made short work of another Bulgarian import by smashing Radoslav Mitev (10st 4lb) to defeat in seventy-nine seconds. Prince started fast going after Mitev's body but did ship two crude right hands in return. The Cumbernald man then landed a three punch combination which planted the Bulgarian on the canvas. Mitev held the top of his head as he couldn't regain his balance. It was fast jab , right hook, followed by a hook to the body that done the damage. Referee Ged O'Neil counted out Mitev who made no attempt to rise. Prince moves to 11-1-1, Mitev loses for the ninth time in thirteen fights.
New Cumnock's Billy Campbell upset local favourite Ryan Scott over 4x3s at Light middle. Campbell (11st 3lbs 4oz) boxed well with a tight guard picking his shots whilst Scott was wide open as he often switched stance as he was being caught by Campbell's right hand. In the second round roared on by decent following Scott battered Campbell on the ropes forcing the Ayrshire man to cover up. It was to be Scott's best round as in the third and fourth Campbell simply picked off Scott with his jab and began bullying him to the ropes where he would land cluster combinations to head and body. Victor Loughlin scored the fight for Campbell 39-38. My score from ringside was a little wider at 39-36 Campbell.
Scott loses his unbeaten record and is now 2-1 1Ko. Campbell improves to 3-1.
Wishaw fighter Mark Parvin (10st 4lb) lost his unbeaten record as he faded badly against Halifax battler Richard Bitner over 4x3 minute rounds at welterweight. Parvin looked tired and was bloodied by the fitter and harder punching Bitner who walked through a non existant jab and then began to batter Parvin on the ropes. Each round was the same, Parvin would come out throw a few punches then go back into his shell as Bitner bullied him about the ring. Bitner capped off a fine performance by flooring Parvin late in the last round with a right to the body. Parvin got up but lost on Referee Kenny Pringles card 39-36. I had this fight a white wash scoring for Bitner 40-35.
Southpaw Darren McAdam improved to 3-0 1Ko by easily out pointing the experienced Arek Malek over 6x2 minute rounds at welterweight. McAdam (10st 4lb 8oz) fought a controlled fight by keeping the Pole at bay with his right jab and fast combinations to the body. The Govan man can be happy with his performance as he peppered Malek (10st 3lb) without really taking anything in reply. What impressed most was McAdams footwork a he controlled the distance between himself and his opponent giving Malek plenty of angles before landing the right jab and left hook. It was all one way traffic which reflected on Referee Ged O'Neil's scorecard who had McAdam running out a 60-54 winner.
Sean Watson from Fauldhouse boxed his way to a 4 round decision over tough and experienced former Scottish champ James Ancliff over 4x3 minute round at Super Featherweight. The fight was nearly over in the first round as twice Watson (9st 6lb 8oz) rocked Ancliff (9st 4lb 6 oz) with over hand rights. Ancliff survived but over the four rounds couldn't do much with his younger opponent. Watson controlled this fight by moving well and counter punching Ancliff with a solid right hand. Watson was also impressive when put under pressure on the ropes by landing the cleaner punches. In the third Ancliff who was clearly frustrated lost a point for persistent holding and hitting. Watson closed the show in the fourth with a huge right hand that snapped Ancliff's head back but like before could not find the finishing punch. Referee Victor Loughlin scored this one 40-36 Watson.
Late replacement Michael Kelly from Ireland lost a four round decision to decent prospect Rhys Pagen over 4x3s at welterweight. Pagen easily won this one using his jab to keep the smaller squat Kelly from getting near him. The Man from Sanquhar mixed his combinations very well but it was his body attack that was most impressive as Pagen banged the body at every opportunity. Kelly reddened by the body attack earned his money in this one as it was all one way traffic with the Irishman really taking a beating. Kelly made it to the final bell but lost every round on Referee Ged Neil's card which read 40-36.
Unbeaten Jordan McCorry and Newcastle fighter Dougie Curran fought to an entertaining draw over 6x2s at Lightweight. Curran (9st 9lb 4oz) was added late to the bill and certainly gave Cambuslang fighter McCorry all he could handle after a slow start. McCorry (9st 8lb 8oz) started better landing some nasty looking body shots but as the fight wore on "the bullet" as hes called came more and more into the fight by out working his opponent from the outside but also on the inside as vicious uppercuts seemed to take some of the enthusiasm away from McCorry. Both guys were well matched and it was no surprise that Referee Kenny Pringle scored this fight a draw 57-57. McCorry is now 5-0-1 1Ko, Curran 8-16-3 2Ko's.
Opening the show was Stirling warrior George Thomson who upped his record to 2-0 with a hard fought point win over journeyman Martyn King. Thomson (10st 9lb) fought for every min of every round in this 6x2 minute fight never giving King (11st 1lb) a chance to settle. Sometimes it was a scrappy affair but the better punches were being landed by Thomson although he did smother his work at times. Referee Ged O'Neil scored the fight to Thomson 58-56

Fighting in front of a near capacity crowd at the Ravenscraig Regional facility Motherwell. Castlemilk's Gary McCallum captured the Scottish Middleweight Title by out boxing Stranraer's Paul Allison over 10x3 minute rounds. McCallum (11st 5lbs 2oz) used his spearing jab to maximum effect to keep the determined Allison (11st 4lb 8oz) at bay in the first, Allison just couldn't get near him as he ate the odd straight right also. The man from South West Scotland kept coming at McCallum in the next few rounds but found his success limited to body shots when he trapped McCallum on the ropes. McCallum was boxing and moving well, his jab was keeping Allison off balance and that straight right was causing a bit of damage round the eyes of his opponent.
The middle rounds followed the same suit. Allison chasing, McCallum evading but spearing the jab doing more than enough to keep Allison off him. Allison best round was the seventh where he managed to trap McCallum on the ropes for a big part of the round. Maybe once or twice it looked as if the body shots from Allison were bothering McCallum but the Glasgow man fought back hard rocking Allison head back with three solid jabs.
Round eight was a close one as Allison began to get desperate. He was charging in recklessly trying just to land anything that would change the fight in his favour. McCallum stayed focused though. He knew he was way ahead so really only had to stay out of danger in the last few rounds. McCallum then got his second wind. In the ninth he was very accurate with the jab and straight right. It landed three, four times as Allison chased him around the ring.
The tenth started out with Allison going for the Hail Mary punch. A big left hook forced McCallum back as Allison attacked on the ropes. McCallum kept his head even sneaking in a few right uppercuts when in clinch. In the closing stages McCallum got the distance he needed by landing the punches he had been scoring with all night, the jab followed by that straight right. At the final bell McCallum ran to the corner and jumped on the ropes to celebrate. Allison trudged back to his corner knowing he had been beaten by the better man. Star Referee Victor Loughlin agreed scoring in favour McCallum 98-93.
McCallum is now 9-0 none early, Allison falls to 5-2-1.
Chief Support on this Prospect Boxing show was local favourite Iain Butcher (8st 3lbs 6oz) who was cheered on by a large support. Butcher took on Bulgarian import Galin Paunov (8st 3lb 8oz) over 6x3s in a flyweight bout which lasted less in 2 minutes. The Motherwell man looks a real prospect as he floored Paunov 3 times in the first round all with body shots. Referee Kenny Pringle rightly stopped the fight at 1.57 after the third knock down. Paunov was in no condition to continue. It was a brief look at Butcher but already he looks as if he could quite far in the game. His body shots were lethal and now must be aiming to get a British title shot before the end if the year. Butcher is now 7-0 2 Ko's.
Mitch Prince (10st 1lb) made short work of another Bulgarian import by smashing Radoslav Mitev (10st 4lb) to defeat in seventy-nine seconds. Prince started fast going after Mitev's body but did ship two crude right hands in return. The Cumbernald man then landed a three punch combination which planted the Bulgarian on the canvas. Mitev held the top of his head as he couldn't regain his balance. It was fast jab , right hook, followed by a hook to the body that done the damage. Referee Ged O'Neil counted out Mitev who made no attempt to rise. Prince moves to 11-1-1, Mitev loses for the ninth time in thirteen fights.

Winning Ugly - Abril Tops Bogere

Richard Abril vs Sharife Bogere - WBA Lightweight Title
Fighting for the first time in eleven months Richard Abril returned at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas to successfully defend his newly acquired WBA 135lb title toughing it out against Uganda's Sharife Bogere. Abril won an unanimous decision in what was an awkward fight not just for the fighters but the viewers at home watching on Showtime and Boxnation.
They say styles make fights?. Well this fight didn't mix well as Abril boxes with a stand up, lean back jabbing style that makes him so hard to fight against. Bogere is a walk forward type of guy that throws wild punches but also is dangerous with the head. In this fight Referee Russell Mora deducted a point of each fighter for continual fouling. Abril was the first to feel the Refs wrath for holding then in the last round Bogere lost a point for dangerous use of his head.
The first round started as expected. Abril boxing and Bogere rushing in trying to land his bombs, Early on it was getting ugly as Bogere threw Abril to the floor after an exchange. In the first Abril had landed the better punches by landing the odd jab and straight right hand. Bogere had a better second round as he was able to push the champion back landing crude hooks. There was not much quality in the round but Bogere certainly won on work rate as Abril did next to nothing. Timing became the key for Abril in the third as countered the challengers attack by landing his honey punch - the right hand which usually followed a jab.
Abril kept up his good work in the fourth as the jab, straight right began to land time after time. Bogere was still having his successes particularly with a counter right but it was not enough to win his the round. After four i had the fight 39-36 Abril. The Ugandan started the fifth better by winning the first minute of the round, The problem was he couldn't get out of the way of Abril's right hand. The one-two as its called in the trade was nailing the Challenger continuously thus widening the scorecards for the champion. The most dominant round in the fight was the sixth as Abril started to land the Left hook when finishingh is one-two's. Bogere response was to attack faster pushing the champion to the ropes. Midway through the round both clashed heads with the champion coming away with the worst of it. He was cut over the right eye prompting the Referee to seek medical advice from the doctor.
Bogere might have wished the fight was stopped there as he might have had a chance on the scorecard. In the last six rounds couldi only gave Bogere one of them, it was the Seventh based on Bogere being too aggressive again for the champion who more interested in protecting his eye.
Referee Russell Mora then took a point from Abril in the eighth. Excessive holding was the charge. From then on Abril stood more actually fighting his tough challenger head on. The Cuban was now landing his straight right even more now. Bogere was slowing down. He just couldnt slip that straight right hand.
To everyone surprise Bogere came out circulating Abril landing his jab for the first minute of the round. The Ugandan looked quite good as he matched jabs with the champion. That plan ended when a beautiful four punch combination jarred the challengers head back. Bogere then went back on the attack but he was being totally out boxed by this point. Round ten and eleven followed suit, Bogere chasing but shipping that right hand. Bogere needed a KO in the twelfth and he came out looking for it maybe a little too much as finally Mora took a point away for foul play. This time the charge was excessive use of the head. Abril then took no chances as he easily saw out the rest of the fight. It had looked a close one after six rounds but from then on the champions showed his class by figuring out his opponent and actually being a bit more aggressive himself.
Abril now wants Adrien Broner who was an animated spectator at ringside. Bogere though he should have won and will no doubt chase a rematch.

Fightscorecollector's March Fight List
On Fightscorecollector in March i will be covering only 3 fights BUT i will also be covering 2 WHOLE BILLS. Starting my month Richard Abril and Sharif Bogere contest the vacant WBA 135lb Title with the winner moving on to bigger fights and bigger paydays. I then head across to Motherwell, Scotland to report on an 11 fight card promoted by Prospect boxing. The next night ageless warrior Bernard Hopkins goes after another world title as he challenges Tavoris Cloud in Brooklyn New York.
I'm London bound on Saturday the 16th as i will be reporting from the Wembley Arena as Frank Warren puts on a massive show headlined by the Lightweight unification match between Ricky Burns and Miguel Vasquez. All of the under card fights (10 in total) will have a fight report on this site. The month finishes with the rematch in what i think was fight of the year in 2012 - Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado from Las Vegas. A great way to end a busy month
