MAYWEATHER VS MAIDANA PRESS SCORES

Floyd Mayweather the self proclaimed "Best Ever" was made to work harder than expected by Argentine puncher Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last night. Mayweather unified the WBC and WBA Welterweight titles on a night where he was hit much more than he is used too before coming away with a majority decision. The pro Maidana crowd of 16,268 booed the decision as they thought their man had done enough to finally end Mayweather's 18 year winning streak. It was a majority decision, the 2nd in a row for Floyd who saw his record improve to 46-0 only 3 short of Heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record that has stood since the 50s.

After all the controversy the night before regarding the padding in Miadana's Everlast gloves, Maidana was somehow forced to change his Everlast MX gloves to a different type. This after the commission had passed them as being fit and proper to use. No doubt there will be more on this in the coming days as Maidana should not have been asked to change them especially after the officials were happy with them. In the post fight press conference both Maidana and his trainer Robert Garcia made the point to the media that they were "forced" to change gloves. When Mayweather was asked he simply dodged the question and went on about fighters safety. 

To the fight and Maidana as everyone expected started fast bullying Mayweather to the ropes trying to land his chopping right as Floyd ducked and dived. The WBC champion responded in the 2nd by using his blinding speed to catch Maidana with his quick counter right. The pattern continued for the first 4 rounds. It was an even fight. Maidana kept the pressure on in the 5th as Floyd now cut from a head clash looked worried about the sight of his own blood.. Later Floyd said that he couldn't see for 2 rounds, this partly explains why Maidana had such a strong 4th and 5th round.

Mayweather came back in rounds 6 and 7 as he controlled the pace of the fight, moving more freely as his eye began to heal. Floyd put on the expected clinic as Maidana was now the one to look tired but as ever he came back in the 8th out working the 1/10 ON favourite. The fight was even again, the upset was on, could Maidana keep the pressure on?. The answer was NO as Floyd stepped up his output. That lead right hand knocked Maidana's head back more and more as the smooth boxing, the picking of his shots looked like it was confusing the man from Santa Fe. Floyd swept rounds 9 to 11 on this writers card which put him in lead which could only be caught with knockdowns or a knockout from Maidana. 

The 12th was close as Maidana tried to go for the KO, Floyd was still moving well but was probably out worked especially in the last minute in the round. As the final bell rung both fighters raised their hands in victory, the Maidana fans were sure of victory as they cheered loudly expectant for their fighter to be declared the winner. They were to be denied though as Judges Burt Clements and Dave Moretti scored the fight to Mayweather 117-111 and 116-112. The 3rd judge Michael Pernick had it a draw 114-114. AT the post fight press conference Maidana screamed for a rematch, Floyd on his part agreed so it looks like it could be on in September. The rematch will now be bigger as Maidana pushed Floyd really close with many questioning if Floyds long career is finally catching up with. It was a great fight, much better than expected. If Mayweather is on the slide then the September fight should be better especially if Maidana can were his preferred gloves.

December Score Collections On Boxing News

December was a busy month for boxing as the main promotional teams from both sides of the Atlantic put on huge shows sometimes on the same night. It was a fantastic end to the year which saw possibly the biggest upset of the year followed by the biggest fairy tale of the year as Argentine Hitman Marcos Maidana closed the mouth of Adrien Broner and Stuart Hall won the IBF Bantamweight title in a heroic performance against Vusi Malinga. Slowey vs Hughes - THE WAR

With Eddie Hearn announcing last night that Ricky Burns will meet American Terrance Crawford sometime in February and if he is looking for a fan favourite, TV friendly fight for the under card then he should add Jon Slowey and Kris Hughes to the huge Sky TV bill as on Saturday night at the Gorbals Leisure Centre, these two guys gave the fans an early Christmas present by going toe to toe for 10 rounds for the Scottish Area Title.

Slowey (9st) and Hughes (8st 13lbs) gave the fans a throwback fight where from the opening bell the pro Slowey crowd had already raised the decibels a few notches but went quiet quickly as Champion Hughes came out all guns blazing looking for the early finish. Lead right hooks followed by lefts banged against Sloweys head in the opening minute. It wasn't until the challenger began to time his jab knocking the head back of Hughes that the fans came back to life. Slowey then began to land his right hook off the jab as the round came to an end. Hughes had taken the first because of his fast start but the WAR was only beginning.

In the 2nd and 3rd rounds Slowey started using his upper body and head movement to get the better of the champion. The jab was the key as it continually landed and set up that lead right hook again. Hughes did have success aswell because of his height and reach. This made Slowey fight on the front foot trying to avoid the champions hooks and body shots inside. Slowey punches were landing cleaner at this point although the 3rd could have went either way. The 4th started with Hughes on the attack again he was caught buy a big right hook which pushed him back to the ropes. Hughes then turned Slowey landing hooks of his own as Slowey was trapped on the ropes. Slowey escaped from the ropes but was caught by 2 cracking straight lefts that sent spray flying from his head. Hughes best round of the fight so far.

Round 5 was also a Hughes round as he was timing the smaller Slowey with the jab, straight left combination, Slowey was still getting Hughes with his lead right hook but after 5 rounds this writer had the champion up by 48-47. Slowey responded in 6th as an accidental head clash caused a cut over Hughes left eye. Slowey then went on the attack as Hughes tried to defend his injury. All square again 57-57 with 4 rounds left.

Both guys were now feeling the hellish pace in rounds 7 and 8 as the fight became scrappy. These rounds could easily have went either way as both guys were still landing their punches although Slowey was looking just that bit fresher. He was raring to go in round 7 up bouncing about while Hughes was slow off his stool. I scored the 7th to Slowey as in the final 30 seconds of the round he landed 2 straight lefts which i feel stole the round for the challenger. In the 8th I couldn't split them as both fighters went back to the jab, Slowey was still getting off quicker combination on the inside but was being caught as he came in.

With 2 rounds left the fight was up for grabs and both fighters knew it. At this point I had Slowey 1 point up 77-76. Hughes using the tactics from the previous round went back on the jab as Slowey tried to get inside. The uppercut from Hughes started to land also as Slowey tried to close the gap. Hughes was having a good round and going by my scoring the fight would hinge on the last.

The crowd were on their feet for the last round round as these 2 local warriors had given them a great show. Slowey again bouncing about raring to go went after Hughes in the last. A big straight left from Slowey pushed Hughes back but as Slowey jumped in both guys cracked head leaving Slowey with a terrible cut high on his forehead. Referee Kenny Pringle then took Slowey to get cleaned up but his face was soon a mess again as the blood oozed from his head. Slowey just went for it, the younger fitter man pushed Hughes to the ropes trying to hit him with anything of note. Hughes covered up then tried to fire back with the jab. Slowey had out worked the champion in this round and on my card had sneaked a 1 point win 96-95. Hamilton Ref Kenny Pringle agreed by awarding Slowey the verdict by the same score. What a fight, Hughes complained, I don't blame him as it was that close. Slowey caps off a fine year which saw him win the International Masters, WBC International Silver and Scottish Area Titles. Slowey is now 16-0 , Hughes drops to 16-5.



Caldercruix's David Brophy (12st) upped his record to 9-0-1 as he won every round 60-54 against Huddersfield's Alastair Warren (11st 13lbs). Brophy now fighting at the 168lb limit looked good early exploding with classy combination on the inside and showing a solid jab. Brophy then controlled the early rounds by going on the back foot, Warren was finding it hard to catch Brophy clean as he possesses a tight hands high defence and decent upper body movement. The jab was the key here as when Brophy used it there was nothing Warren could do. Brophy also looked much better when he stood his ground then pushed Warren back hurting him numerous times with solid uppercuts on the inside. Warren never stopped trying but was simply out classed by Brophy who will now be looking for bigger tests in 2014. Warren falls to 8-5-3.


Craig Docherty (11st 2lbs) the former Commonwealth Super Feather weight champion now fighting at Welterweight made is 2nd appearance in 2 months as he beat tough Pole Tomasz Mazurkiewicz (11st 8oz)  58-56 over 6 rounds. This was no walk in the park for Docherty as he was continually caught on the way in by Mazurkiewicz's quick right hand. In his last fight vs Jenkinson, Docherty had possessed excellent head movement but as he bored in out working the Manchester based fighter the head movement was missing. Docherty had started well pressuring Mazurkiewicz forcing him back but in the last 2 rounds and after sustaining a cut in the 4th Mazurkiewicz came back stopping Docherty in his tracks a few times. Docherty had done enough and was the deserving winner. Docherty ups his record to 26-7-1 (10), Mazurkiewicz is now 5-11-3 (1).


Fighting after more than 18 months out, Kirkintilloch's Alastair Black (9st 13lbs) returned to action scoring a 2nd round TKO win over Manchester's Paul Haines (9st 13lbs) over 4 x 3 at lightweight. Black looks a real prospect as his spearing jab in the first and fast hands dominated Haines who must have thought he was fighting 2 men. In the second a perfectly timed right body shot uppercut floored Haines for the 8 count. The fight was then waved over 20 seconds later as Training Ref Ged O'Neil called a halt to the contest as Haines was taking fire on the ropes. It was a controversial stoppage as Haines was covering up well and don't look that much in trouble. Promoter Alex Morrison was so unhappy that he confronted the Trial Ref after the fight. Official time of the stoppage was 1.00. Black is now 2-0 (1), Haines 0-12-1.


Opening the show saw Glasgow's Hugh Gray (10st 7lbs) also making his second appearance in 2 months as he easily outpointed Atherton's William Warburton (10st 12lbs) over 4 rounds at Welterweight. Gray simply out worked his journeyman opponent showing a classy jab and a desire to work inside if needed. In every round Warburton was forced to the ropes shipping punishment from Gray who's inside work was really impressive. Scoring from Ringside Kenny Pringle had this 40-36 Gray who now moves to 5-0 (1). Warburton falls to 10-55-3 (2)

Burns-Beltran : Message to the WBO

Dear Sir's at the WBO,

I run the "fightscorecollector" site where i collect Press scores from around the world and compare them to the judges scorecards. I have now landed a slot on British Boxing News  Website where i cover a fight each week scoring a selected fight.

I was at Ringside for the Ricky Burns vs Ray Beltran fight on September 7th covering the whole bill for my site. This was the last article i posted before i was offered the chance to team up with Boxing News.

My findings for the Burns-Beltran fight were are follows...... 44 Press Members were polled for their score and 44 scored for Beltran with an average score of 115-112 Beltran.

Now this is very surprising as the fight was "Close". My card read 114-113 Beltran. I have been running my site for nearly 2 years and i have not found the Press to be in such agreement for a close fight.

I understand that the WBO have published their response to letter posted by Top Rank stating that Top Rank view a rematch should happen or Beltran should be awarded the title. I also saw the WBO response stating the WBO Rules and how your 5 man panel came to their decision that Beltran will not get an immediate rematch but simply just move him up the rankings.

Personally with my stats that seems very unfair and i know the WBO have had their 5 man panel look at the fight. Surely posting their score instead of a round percentage would have been better???.

Did all 5 judges score for Beltran?? if they did then Beltran must get a rematch. That surely is a simple way of saying , our judges got this wrong instead of using round stats.

Can i also ask if any action will be taken against Carlos Ortiz Jnr as his card was way out. If these judges who post bad scores do not get demoted then the problem of bad scores are going to keep on happening.

Ricky Burns fought his mandatory in May 2012. Surely the WBO can grant their 2 weight world champion a voluntary defence vs a guy who was very unlucky not to win the title because of 2 judges cards. Then the winner fights Crawford within 90 Days?? This is what the press and fans think is best. Is this not the fairest way for all fighters to be treated?.

Thank you for your time and i hope the WBO can get back to me, I am passionate about scoring fights as you can see. I just think that the WBO could have arranged a rematch for the unlucky Beltran.

"The One" Undercard Press Scores

Danny Garcia vs Lucas Matthysse - WBC . WBA 140lb Titles

Lets make no mistake. This fight could have been a Main Event in its own right. Danny Garcia the young WBC and WBA champion from Philly was actually the underdog against the hard punching Argentine Lucas Matthysee. The fight was expected to be a shoot out with many picking Matthysse to prevail. One big surprise was this fight going the distance with Garcia giving a boxing clinic at times neutralising the Argentine's power with clever boxing and a jab that closed Matthysee's left eye half way through the fight. Add a late knock down scored by Garcia basically sealed the win and probably his best performance.

Angel Garcia can now rest, if that's possible. At the Pre fight press conference the champions Father said he would cut of his head if his son lost the fight. Thankfully for him Danny fought a very controlled and disciplined fight to prove the doubters wrong. Garcia plans to move to Welterweight now where the ultimate challenge awaits, A shot at "Money" Mayweather and huge payday. Many think Garcia is in prime position to get the shot as the Great Mayweather is running out of challenges.

Ishe Smith vs Carlos Molina - IBF 154lb Title

In a good old fashioned "Snoozer" Ishe Smith made the first defence of his IBF Light Middleweight strap against Carlos Molina but was then relieved of his title as the Mexican now living in Chicago outworked the champion on the way to a split decision. Smith who had collapsed in the ring in joy when winning the title in February started far to slowly as Molina basically punched far to often for the pensive champion. Molina was continually warned for leading with the head by Referee Jay Nady but never received a point deduction. Molina faded in the mid to late rounds but came back in the last two to rubber stamp his victory. The new champion was nearly robbed of his glory as judge Adalaide Byrd scored the fight for Smith. Thankfully the two other judges got this one right and awarded the victory to Molina. My card read 116-112 Molina.

Ashley Theophane vs Pablo Cesar Cano

Kicking off the Undercard on the Showtime Telecast was Britain's Ashley Theophane against tough Mexican Pablo Cesar Cano in what was beforehand thought to be a 50-50 fight. Both fighters didn't disappoint as from round one Cano chased Theophane around the ring trying to land the knockout blow whilst Theophane fought back showing his heart as he was hurt quite bad on more than one occasion. Theophane's work on the back foot kept the fight close but it wasn't enough as Cano was awarded a unanimous decision. My card read 97-93 Cano. The Mexican will now be looking for a title shot at 140 especially if Danny Garcia vacates his WBC and WBA titles.

The Judges had this fight (Richard Houck) 97-93 Cano, (Patricia Jarman) 98-92 Cano and  (Richard Ocasio) 96-94 Theophane.

Burns - Beltran Press Scores

Last night at the SECC arena in Glasgow Scotland Raymundo Beltran looked like he came away from his title fight with hometown hero Ricky Burns on the end of a bad decision. My view is that Beltran did deserve to win BUT i don't buy the shouts of a "Massive Robbery". If you want to see a massive robbery please watch fights such as Whitaker-Ramierez 1 in Paris. I had that 118-110 to Whitaker. Thats a shafting by the judges, if you watch the fight just see how Lou Duva reacts.

 My card read 114-113 Beltran which equates to 6-6 in rounds but add the extra point Beltran got for the Knockdown in the 8th then you can see how i had him the winner. My card is below and if you read the fight report 2 articles down on this site then you will see how I explained how i scored each round.

I was able to collect 44 press scores for the Burns-Beltran fight. My results show that Beltran must be given a rematch as ALL press members had Beltran winning the fight. For a fight that many has called close, it just shows that Beltran should be new champion right now. I hope whatever happens with Ricky Burns and his broken jaw that he gives Raymundo Beltran a rematch for the title. As mentioned before Team Beltran have been a class act, even when they have saw their fighter denied victory.

Simmons Impresses On Burns-Beltran Undercard

Main support to the Burns-Beltran event was an exciting clash of top Cruiserweight prospects from the UK and Germany. Edinburgh's Stephen Simmons took on unbeaten German David Graf over ten rounds for the vacant WBC International Silver Crusierweight title. Its not often you see two prospects facing each other this early in their career although beforehand fans on twitter and on the main boxing forums agreed that they were pleasantly surprised that both fighters were ready to risk their unbeaten records against each other.

Simmons entered to RunRig's "Loch Lomand" which got the crowd roaring before the fight. Graf looked massive although he was outweighed by Simmons by three pounds. The German started the fight well, he was quicker getting his shots off as Simmons bored in. Graf Knocked Simmons head back a few times in the opener with over hand rights. Simmons though kept coming forward. Simmons won the second and third by bringing his over hand right into play. The jab was also an important weapon as it stopped Graf from setting himself for his own punches.

Round four saw a breakthrough from Simmons as a hard straight right hand floored the German after a good exchange a few seconds earlier. Graf was hurt and had to cover up for the rest of the round. Another huge right hand rocked Graf at the bell. Big Round for "The Monster".

Graf to his credit came back in round five where after two straight right hands and another exciting exchange of hooks Simmons came away with a cut left eye. It looked quite bad too. Simmons responded in the sixth by upping the pace. Graf was fading at this point as Simmons was landing the one-two combination at will. Graf again came back in the seventh, Simmons had slowed a little due to the last round effort. Graf again was getting his punches of first. It was enough to keep Simmons at bay. Round Eight i scored even as both guys were tired and holding a lot when in close. Both guys had success with the straight right but no fighter was dominant enough to merit winning the round.

The Edinburgh fighter began to show his superior fitness in the ninth as he started with a well placed jab, jab, straight combination that bounced off Graf,s head. Simmons then followed by bulling Graf to the ropes hurting him with left hook to the body. Graf couldn't escape as Simmons aimed hooks to body and head.
The Simmons pressure continued early in the tenth as Straight rights and bod shots reigned in on Graf. The German was in survival mode now as Simmons continually blocked Graf on the ropes. When the bell rang there could only be one winner. The judges agreed by awarding Simmons a unanimous decision 99-91, 98-92, 97-92. Simmons improves to 9-0.


Scotland gained another WBC International Silver champion as Glasgow's  Jon Slowey saw off Spain's Angel Lorente over 10 Rounds. Slowey who won the British Masters title at he start of year dominated just about every round with his southpaw stance and a more aggressive style.

Slowey knocked  Lorente down in the 1st although it looked more of a push. Referee Ian John Lewis gave Lorente the eight count before letting the Spaniard continue. Slowey fought aggressively timing his straight left to perfection early followed by some decent lead right hooks. Lorente is a counter puncher but Slowey was throwing far too much leather for his style to have any impact on the fight.

The Spaniard best round was the eighth where he started out with three straight rights that caught Slowey coming in but by the end of the round Slowey was landing his lead hooks again forcing Lorente to the back foot. Slowey easily won the tenth which cemented a dominant performance and a much better showing this time around from the hard fight he received from Belfast's Eddie Nesbitt back in May. Judges cards were 97-93, 99-90 and 98-91. Slowey improves to 15-0.


Scott Cardle got a very useful workout from Fishburn's Gary Fox over 8 x 3 at Lightweight. Cardle from Lythan St Annes brought a noisy support as he started the fight moving around Fox who fought with a high guard and punched in spurts. Fox had brought a noisy sport too cheering when Fox got close letting his punches go. The first two rounds were close with Cardle probably landing the cleaner shots from distance.

Fox attacked more in the third but Cardle boxed cute catching the on rushing Fox with well timed left hooks. A huge left hook in the fourth this time from Fox Sent Cardle off balance, Fox rushed in landing his quick flurries again. A good round for Fox. The counter punching was again working for Cardle in rounds five and six. With his hands at his waist style, Cardle drew Fox too him spinning away after catching Fox with counter hooks and right hands. Cardle saw out the fight in rounds seven and eight by dominating with his jab, Fox was fading at this point as Cardle's class was beginning to show. Cardle ran out a 79-73 winner on Referee Kenny Pringles card. Cardle improves to 12-0.


Callum Smith of Liverpool kept up his record of winning every fight in 2013 by first round KO by stopping Lithuanian import Kirill Psonko with brutal body shots. This fight was at super-middleweight over  6 x 3s but mid way through the round a huge combination of body shots by Smith floored Psonko. Referee Victor Loughlin gave the Lithuanian every chance but it over seconds later as another left hook to the body ended the fight at 2.30 of the round. Psonko is usually durable so it was a decent win for Smith who now needs sterner tests. Smith improves to 7-0 5KO's.

Paul Appleby the former British Feather weight champion made a welcome return with a hard fought decision win over tough Chesterfield man Lee Connell. This was Appleby's first fight since the War with fellow Scot John Simpson last June at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow where he was stopped in six rounds. Appleby edged the first here against Connelly although he ended the round with a bloody nose. In rounds two and three Connolly was still game but the better placed punches were coming from the ex champion especially to the body, a favourite punch of Appleby. Round four i gave to Connolly as it was toe to toe punch for punch. I felt that Connolly's defence was better in this round as both guys took turns of firing hurtful looking hooks at each other on the ropes.
 Appleby took a step back in the fifth and began to use his boxing skills, a nice jab, straight right combination early in the round being his best punches. By the sixth round Appleby was well in charge as he drove Connolly back with right hooks to the body followed by hooks to the head. Connolly fought back though and landed a big right hand that stopped Appleby in his tracks. It was too late to impact the fight and Appleby ran out a 59-56 winner on Referee Kenny Pringle's card. Appleby is now 19-4 11 Ko's.


Opening the Glasgow show was Prizefighter champion Chris Jenkins of Garnot, Wales who upped his record to 11-0 5ko's by being pushed hard by Frenchman Laurent Ferra over 6x3s at Light welterweight. I had Jenkins winning every round but Ferra was a tough guy who took everything Jenkins threw at him and still kept coming forward. In the second Jenkins got a cut over his eye form a head clash so for the next few rounds he boxed nicely hurting the Frenchman to the body on more than one occasion. Again Ferra fought through the pain to chase Jenkins about. Referee Victor Loughlin could have stopped the fight in the fifth or sixth as Ferra's face was a mask of blood. The tough strong Frenchman deserved to continue to the final bell although was given only a share of a round by Loughlin as he scored the fight 60-55 for Jenkins.


Michael Roberts and David Brophy had to wait until after the Burns-Beltran fight to showcase their talents and have their fights cut to four rounds but both gave commanding performances against Eddie Nesbitt and Jason ball. Roberts easily out boxed aggressive Nesbitt from the outside in what was a very good performance considering how close Nesbitt of Belfast ran Jon Slowey close in May. Roberts ran out a 39-37 points winner on Kenny Pringles card in a fight at Super-Featherweight.

  Brophy of Caldercruix used an improving jab and right hand to stave off the attention of journeyman Jason Ball at Middleweight. Brophy again looked better than his May outing by moving better and starting faster. Referee Kenny Pringle scored this a shut out for Brophy 40-36.

Ray Beltran Denied In Glasgow

Fighting in front of a hostile Glasgow crowd, Raymundo Beltran fought the fight of his life against 2 weight world champion Ricky Burns flooring the home favourite before only coming away with a draw. Many at ringside had the popular Mexican - American a close points winner. After the fight Ray Beltran asked for a rematch in America. Ricky Burns speaking to Sky Sports said he would give Beltran the rematch after he got his jaw fixed. At the time of writing this article Eddie Hearn (Burn Promoter) has posted am x-ray picture of Burns jaw on twitter showing a clean break. The break happened in the second round according to Burns. This could maybe be explained why Burns retreated so much throughout the fight after that round.

The Scottish champion started the fight brightly boxing and moving within range peppering Beltran with quick jabs and straight right hands. A good first round for the champion. Beltran quickened his feet in the second as he started forcing Burns back a little. Beltran was still being out boxed at this stage as he was being picked off as he walked forward trying to pressure the champion. Late in the round the challenger got his first success as he backed Burns to the ropes and fired away with hooks to body and head. It wasn't enough to win the round but Beltran was back in the fight.

In round three the fight began to change as Burns couldn't keep Beltran off him. The pressure early was beginning to tell as Beltran trapped Burns on the ropes numerous times. A big left hook from Beltran knock Ricky off balance mid way through the round. Burns got on his bike and jabbed to safety. The fourth followed suit as another big left hook by Beltran staggered Burns. The champion was being forced to fight of the ropes now as his jab became non exisitant. Beltran had nothing to walk through to get to the champion, this continued in the fifth as Burns couldn't keep Beltran away. Another round for the challenger.

I gave Burns round six and seven as he started to box within range of Beltran again instead of backing up. Boxing and moving Burns actually pushed Beltran back in round seven even landing some hurtful looking bodyshots. The burns jab and right hand was back, how would Beltran respond as he had been in charge for the previous three rounds?.

 Round eight started very badly for Ricky Burns as a huge left hook by Beltran floored the champion heavily for an eight count. Beltran then went for the kill as he chased Ricky around the ring looking to finish the fight. Burns survived but it was another big round for the challenger.

The ninth was a hard round to judge, there wasn't much quality being landed by both fighters. Burns was landing jabs and Beltran was landing the odd body shot when he was able to trap Ricky on the ropes. Both guys were tired from the previous round but i gave Beltran the round as he was still forcing Burns back to the ropes more than Burns and his trainer Billy Nelson would have liked. Round ten was the same, a scrappy round with Burns Jabbing and moving to keep Beltran away. Burns has a good first minute of the round as Beltran never landed anything of note. Beltran came back in the last minute of the round picking those hard body shots as Ricky had his hand high protecting his injured jaw. Close round but one i gave to Beltran due to aggresiveness.

The champion rallied in the eleventh by hitting Beltran with quick jab, straight right combinations before moving out of range. Beltran again came on in the second minute of the round before with ten seconds left Burns put Beltran on the ropes for a change landing two uppercuts inside. It was enough to sneak the round on my card.

As the last round started i think Ricky Burns must have known that he needed the twelfth to have any chance of regaining his title. Beltran had looked in control for big periods in the fight where Ricky after a good start had maybe nicked a few more rounds back with cleaner work. I gave Burns the twelfth as Burns went back to the jabbing and moving that had Beltran chasing him early with no success. Beltran did come back though, in most rounds Beltran by the end of the round had Ricky against the ropes defending himself from the accurate body punches. It wasn't enough for me to score the round for the challenger but overall i thought that Beltran had scored a narrow victory over the home favorite. The judges disagreed, well two of them did anyway scoring 115-112 for Burns (Caros Ortiz Jnr) and 114-114 Draw (Ritchie Davies). This mean that Ricky kept his title by a split draw. The third judge from Belguim Andre Van Grootenbruel scored for Beltran 115-113

 Raymundo Beltran does deserve a rematch. His team were a credit to boxing Pre and Post fight. As mentioned at the start of the article, Ricky Burns says he will give Beltran a rematch. I think Burns is a man of is word and he will give the unlucky challenger another shot at the title although that will probably need to wait until 2014 as Burns jaw will need time to heal.

Dereck Chisora with one huge overhand right hand salvaged his heavyweight career by stopping previously unbeaten American Malik Scott at the Wembley Arena last night. The fight ended in controversy though as Scott misjudged Referee's Phil Edwards count by rising to late therefore losing the fight by KO. The American didn't look that bothered when the fight was over although his corner team went crazy.

Scott from Philadelphia had started the fight well by using his superior footwork to avoid most of Chisora's bombs. Chisora was getting close to Scott but was not letting his shots go as the American simply tied him up. Many before hand had predicted Scott winning the early rounds before Chisora would come on late looking for stoppage. After three rounds it certainly followed that plan as Chisora was limited to landing the odd combination to the body whilst Scott would catch the Brit with some hard right uppercuts as he shuffled his way in. Round four saw a change in the action as it was Chisora now landing more by trapping Scott on the ropes. Scott couldn't really escape the pressure as he was forced to cover up as Chisora rushed him then battered away.

In the fifth Scott returned to sharp footwork that had worked so well for him earlier in the fight. The jab was landing more and you could see he was trying to time Chisora with the big right hand. Chisora had dropped his intensity which had won him the fourth and on my card was two rounds down. 

The sixth started with the pressure being applied by Chisora again. Scott looked as if he was tiring, not a major worry  but his punch output dropped as again and again he was forced to take shots on the ropes as Chisora bullied him around. The end came very suddenly as Scott got trapped on the ropes and Chisora detonated that huge over hand right that caught Scott high on the side of the head. It didn't look at huge shot but down went Scott. Referee Edwards took up the count, Scott remained on one knee until the count reached nine. He then stood up to continue to fight, BUT the fight was over. Scott had been counted out. It was a terrible misjudgement by the American as Chisora began to celebrate. Team Scott went crazy although Scott himself didn't look that bothered, even in his post fight interview on Boxnation TV the American seemed calm and not that angry at the referee or losing his unbeaten record.

Dereck "Del Boy" Chisora will now fight on September 21st according to Promoter/Manager Frank Warren probably defending his newly acquired WBO International Heavyweight title. A rematch with Scott was mentioned by Warren but it wont take place in Chisora's immediate future.

One Hit Wonder - Derry Snatches The Title

Trailing on points, severely winded and being totally out boxed. Derry Mathews rescued his career AGAIN by stopping home town favourite Tommy Coyle in the tenth round to win the vacant Commonwealth Lightweight title. The lively Hull crowd packed into the Craven Park Stadium hoping to roar Coyle to victory and for nine rounds it had looked like the younger, fresher man was going to give the fans their wish and he totally baffled his more experienced opponent. Mathews then unloaded one big left hook after a clinch to silence the crowd and leave a dejected Coyle to wonder how he had thrown away what had looked like a certain victory.

In the first few rounds it was plain to see what Coyle's tactics would be. At 23 he was six years younger than Mathews but more importantly a hell of a lot quicker than the man from Liverpool. Coyle easily darted in and out of range early in the fight landing flurry after flurry. Mathews chased Coyle around the ring but he had no answer for the Hull man's movement and quick attacks to the body. Mathews probably nicked round 3 as Coyle slowed down just a little. Mathews began to land his jab followed by a few hurtful right hands. Coyle again took charge in the middle rounds. The jab was now keeping Mathews at bay as the Liverpool man plodded after Coyle, Mathews was also being caught with a slashing right hand by Coyle, similar to the right hand Ricky Burns the WBO 135lb champion throws. The more experienced Mathews just could not get into the fight.

The trend continued in rounds seven and eight where Mathews was having some success but was simply being over powered in punch connects by Coyle. For every decent punch Mathew was landing, Coyle was landing two, maybe three. One of the impressive attributes that Coyle was showing was his head movement on the ropes. Mathews would keep the pressure on for most of the fight sometimes trapping Coyle on the ropes but he rarely landed. Coyle's jack in a box movement was driving Mathews crazy. Derry just couldn't let the combinations go.

Coyle looked to have the fight tied up in the ninth as Mathews seemed to be losing steam fast. Body shots rained in on the former British champion as it was now his turn to be pushed against the ropes. The end looked near although not in the way many expected as under pressure and taking punches Mathews unleashed a massive left hook that caught Coyle high on the head and slammed him to the canvas. The crowd fell silent as Referee Phil Edwards gave the Hull man an eight count. Coyle looked shaky so Edwards called the fight off to the obvious delight of Mathews.

The Warrior from Liverpool had came back again when defeat looked likely. Mathews can now look forward to more paydays defending his newly acquired Commonwealth crown although he did offer Coyle a rematch if he wanted it. Coyle who was in complete shock as he was well ahead on the cards said he would love the rematch but was visibly upset when giving his interview to Sky TV.
